There are many of them of places you can access ChatGPT: not only in the official web and mobile apps, but also through Microsoft’s Copilot, and Apple’s Siri assistant… and within the messaging app WhatsApp.
WhatsApp, powered by Facebook developer Meta, is available for free on the web and on Android and iOS. It’s used by billions of people around the world, which helps explain why OpenAI has made ChatGPT available here and everywhere.
Unfortunately, OpenAI will get free access to its chatbot on WhatsApp on January 15, 2026. The company says this is due to a change in Meta’s “policy and terms” for the messaging platform. Either way, you have a couple of months left to take advantage of the free trial.
You can use this whether you have a free or paid ChatGPT account, and you may find it easier to have your AI interactions alongside your other chats if you spend a lot of time on WhatsApp. Just don’t mix ChatGPT with real people you know.
how to start
To talk to ChatGPT inside WhatsApp, you need to add the AI bot as a contact: 1-800-242-8478 (ie 1-800-ChatGPT) is the number you need. In the main conversation list, tap + (more) button (bottom right on Android, top right on iOS), then choose New contact to add ChatGPT number.
