2024 was another year defined by generative AI, with software features put in the hands of millions of people around the world and inevitably integrated into popular services like Google Search. While some AI tools, such as ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode and Google’s NotebookLM, were nice to interact with, the prevailing narrative remained on the technology’s inherent flaws, with rampant hallucinations and ongoing questions about proper data formation.
I mean, who could forget Shrimp Jesus and other surreal AI-generated images floating around Facebook? Or when AI Overviews told Google users that it was okay to eat rocks in moderation and put glue on pizza? It was a year where weird AI-generated content was felt everywhere.
Here at WIRED, 2024 was full of juicy research, in-depth conversations, and comprehensive gadget reviews. This quiz that reviews our journalism throughout the year captures just a small portion of all the hard work and great pieces from my colleagues. With that in mind, I hope it’s an interesting way for readers to reflect on what has often felt like a chaotic year. Links are included at the bottom, after the end of the quiz, for further reading and more information on any of the 10 questions you may have missed.
